What is Very Good Tech

Technology is Hard

We've all experienced bad IT — projects that overrun, features that don't work, processes that are confusing and nonsensical — and for anyone that's ever been responsible for a bad IT system or project, the spiralling costs and the list of broken promises will be a particularly traumatic memory.

Why this happens so frequently can seem like a mystery. Technology is an ever-present in our lives. We carry complex technological devices in our pockets every day. It should be simple, and it should be easy.

But the truth is technology is not easy. Technology is hard. And the reasons for that usually lie in how our organisations function.

Organisations are Complex

The digitalisation of business in the twenty first century has led to extraordinary gains in productivity, efficiency, and customer experience. But those gains all come with a corresponding increase in complexity.

The average corporation utilises hundreds of IT applications supporting many thousands of processes and storing an untold abundance of data. But while organisations value technology for its power to disrupt, they are often unprepared for the impact of that disruption on their own internal processes.

This is because the complexity is hidden from view. It isn't designed up front and it certainly isn't marketed as a feature. It grows over time with every new addition and change, silently and invisibly.

But Very Good Tech is Possible

All of this doesn't mean that bad IT is inevitable — the prevalence of technology in our organisations is testament to that — but we don't get good technology by pretending that it's easy, and it's almost never available "off the shelf".

To get very good tech requires an understanding of the complexity involved, and how to work with that complexity instead of against it. It requires good planning, but also agility to respond to change.

I have spent my career creating very good tech solutions and strategies across multiple industries, and I will be using this blog to share some of my thoughts and experiences.
